Convertible, Retractable – (1941-1972 Passenger, 1941-1970 Mercury)
This category supports the Electrical system for 1941-1972 Passenger, 1941-1970 Mercury applications by covering the dedicated wiring that controls convertible and retractable top assemblies. These are high-load, sequence-dependent circuits that operate through switches, relays, solenoids, circuit breakers, and motor units. Unlike simple lighting branches, top systems rely on controlled current flow in a specific order to move, lock, and secure the roof structure.
Power originates at a protected feed and travels through a circuit breaker and relay before reaching the solenoid and top motor. Any interruption in that path—voltage drop, weak terminal tension, damaged insulation, or poor grounding—can halt movement or prevent lock movement. When tops stop mid-cycle or fail to latch, wiring integrity must be verified before replacing motors or mechanical regulators.
This subsystem includes primary feed wires, control leads, sequencing circuits, and lock motor connections. Proper routing and terminal fit are critical due to the current load and repeated movement of body components during operation.
Technical & Fitment
Primary power enters through the Top Feed Fuse Link Wire and routes through the Top Control Harness To Circuit Breaker Wire and Top Relay To Circuit Breaker Wire. From there, control is managed by the Top Control Switch To Circuit Breaker Wire, Top Switch To Relay Under Hood Harness, and Top Power Relay Wire.
Motor activation depends on the Top Control Switch To Solenoid Wire, Top Control Regulator To Solenoid Wire, and Top Control Switch To Top Motor Wire. Locking and sequencing functions are supported by the Front Motor Lock Wire, Rear Roof Lock Motor Wire, and Top Control Cycle Indicator Wire. The Top Control Cycle Switch Wire and Top Control Solenoid To Starter Solenoid Wire coordinate staged operation.
Additional integration may include Convertible Front Electric Window Switch Wire, Luggage Compartment Wire, Retractable Power Tray Wire, and Top Control, Power Seat & Window Wire where systems share routing.
Fitment will vary by model year or suspension configuration. Within the confirmed 1932-1972 Passenger, 1939-1970 Mercury range, connector style, harness length, and mounting locations differ by body design and top mechanism.
Inspect voltage supply and ground continuity before replacing motors or lock assemblies.
