Tailgates, Chains, Latches, Hardware
Within the Chassis & PU Bed system, the tailgate assembly forms the rear closure of the pickup bed and allows controlled access to the bed area. This category supports 1932-1979 Pick Up applications where the tailgate functions as a hinged panel secured by latches and supported by chains or related hardware.
On classic Ford pickup beds, the tailgate operates as a structural component that must both close securely and support weight when opened. The tailgate itself mounts to the bed through hinge hardware some are located at the lower corners. When opened, the tailgate is supported by chain assemblies or supports that prevent the panel from dropping below a horizontal position.
Because the tailgate sits at the rear of the vehicle and is frequently used during loading, the hardware that controls its movement is exposed to wear and impact. Chains stretch, hinges loosen, and latch components often wear after years of service.
When the system is properly restored, the tailgate opens smoothly, holds level when supported properly, and closes securely against the bed sides.
The tailgate hardware subsystem within the Chassis & PU Bed system controls the movement, support, and locking function of the pickup bed tailgate.
The Tailgate panel itself attaches to the bed through Tailgate Hinges or Tailgate Hinge Straps, which allow the gate to pivot downward. When opened, the panel is supported by Tailgate Chains that connect between the tailgate and the bed side structure. These chains are secured to the tailgate using Tailgate Chain Hooks & Retainer Springs, while Tailgate Chain Brackets provide mounting points at the bed side.
Protective components such as Tailgate Chain Covers and Tailgate Chain Bumpers reduce metal contact and limit movement noise during operation.
The tailgate is secured in the closed position using a Tailgate Latch Assembly, which engages the Tailgate Striker Plate mounted to the bed side structure. A Tailgate Handle operates the latch mechanism, and smaller pieces such as the Tailgate Handle Rod Clip connect the handle to the internal latch linkage.
Additional hardware such as the Tailgate Support and Tailgate Bumper help stabilize the gate and cushion contact between the tailgate and surrounding panels.
Over time, these components commonly develop wear including stretched chains, worn latch mechanisms, bent hinges, or missing hardware pieces.
